Comforts of Home

I tiptoe up the stairs, careful not to step on the exposed tack strips.  They look like a ruler impounded with tiny, sharp tacks pointed upwards.  They are perfect for impaling a foot on.  My steps echo against the bare walls, and I stare wistfully at the rooms packed to the corners with all of our upstairs belongings.  In the midst of all of this, though, is the bed, stacked high with mattresses very similar to something out of the fable, The Princess and the Pea.

I have found myself in this situation because we are getting the carpet replaced in the upstairs which includes the stairwell and bedrooms.  This has forced all of our belongings into piles in the living room and all of the furniture into the opposite bedrooms.  They will complete the carpet over two days, so at least we don’t have to move all of the furniture downstairs because that would be quite the task.  Additionally, we removed the carpet ourselves (and by “we” I mean my husband and father-in-law), so the upstairs echoes anytime you take a step and the tack strips which hold the carpet in are exposed. Overall, it was still quite a task.

Unfortunately, the comfort of my home that I have carefully crafted and oriented over the last several months is gone, but by the end of the week, it will be even better.  And, there is always my slumber “princess and the pea” style to remember with a smile.

  1. New carpet is such an awesome thing, but the work to get it is overwhelming at times. I want to paint my bedroom, and it’s just as much work so I keep putting it off. I know I’ll be so happy when it’s done though! I was reading your post from a few days ago, about not getting everything unpacked. I’m the same. I got married almost 14 years ago, and I still have boxes from my single life that need sorting. Of course, every time I try to throw something out my husband goes through the trash to see if he agrees that it really is trash. Exhausting!

  2. I love The Princess and the Pea!!! I thought it was really great writing that you started and ended with that thread. Great stuff in between, also. I know it’s tough to live through any type of remodeling. I hope it’s everything you wanted when it’s all over!
